Water polo

Water polo is a team game played by two teams of up to 13 a side, only seven of whom may be in the water at the same time. The ball may be propelled one-handed, but not punched by any player other than the goalkeeper. Each team attempts to score by putting the ball into its opponent’s goal.

Playing area

Uniform dimensions are illustrated. The minimum depth for major competitions is 1.80m. All lines must be visible throughout the game. Suggested colours are: goal line and half-distance line, white; 2m line, red; 4m line, yellow.
There must be sufficient room for the referees to walk along the edge of the pool. Goals must be painted white and fixed firmly.

The ball

A water polo ball must be round and fully inflated. It must be completely waterproof. Its circumference must be 68-71cm and its weight 400-450g.
