Rugby league is similar to the union game, from which it developed, but it has its own procedures and a different style of play. The game is played by amateurs and professionals and there are 13 members in each team. |

|
The ball is oval in shape, of four panels and made of leather or other approved material. It weighs 400-440g. A rugby league ball is slightly shorter and thinner than a rugby union ball. |

The referee controls the game and its timing, and signals with a whistle. Two touch judges assist the referee. They stand on either side of the pitch, except when judging kicks at goal. Each has a flag to signal when the ball goes out of play.
