Rugby league

Rugby league is similar to the union game, from which it developed, but it has its own procedures and a different style of play. The game is played by amateurs and professionals and there are 13 members in each team.

The pitch

The pitch conforms to the measurements shown in the diagram. The touch lines are not part of the playing area.

The ball

The ball is oval in shape, of four panels and made of leather or other approved material. It weighs 400-440g.
A rugby league ball is slightly shorter and thinner than a rugby union ball.

Officials

The referee controls the game and its timing, and signals with a whistle.
Two touch judges assist the referee. They stand on either side of the pitch, except when judging kicks at goal. Each has a flag to signal when the ball goes out of play.
