Tennis is a racket game in which individuals (singles) or pairs (doubles) compete against each other. The game is played on a court divided by a net. The object of the game is to propel the ball over the net in such a way that it bounces in court and beats any attempt by an opponent to return it.

 
The Court, The Net

The court
The surface may be grass, a variety of asphalt, wood, porous concrete, or other composition. It is marked out with white lines as shown in the diagram. The lines are included within the limits of the court. The distance from the base line to the service line is 5.485m  Not shown on drawing.

The net is suspended between two posts from a table covered by white tape. At its centre it is kept taut by a vertical strap which is firmly fixed t the ground. The height of the net may be adjusted by a handle attached to one of the posts.

 
Rackets

Rackets must be not more than 32in long and 12 1/2in wide; maximum dimensions for the strung hitting surface are 15 1/2in long and 11 1/2in wide. The hitting surface consists of crossed strings connected to the frame and alternately interlaced or bonded where they cross.
The frames may be made from wood, steel or other compositions.

 
Tennis balls

Tennis balls must be yellow or white. They should weigh 2-2 1/16oz (56.7g-58.5g). The outer surface must be uniform and if there are any seams they must be stitchless.
