Flat green bowls is played by two players or by two sides of up to four players. Points are scored after each “end” (when all the bowls have been delivered). One point is scored for each bowl nearer to the jack than the opposition’s best bowl. Games are decided by ends or by points.

The green is a level grass playing area. Square greens must have sides 33-44yd long (minimum of 40yd for international competitions). Rectangular greens are sometimes permitted, with the same minimum and maximum lengths. The green is bounded by a ditch and bank.

The green is divided into rinks, 14-19ft wide and numbered consecutively. Rink boundaries are marked by green threads attached to pegs at the rink corners. The centre of each rink is marked on the bank at each end by a peg or similar object. White markers on the side banks indicate a distance of 75ft from each end ditch.

The mat is made of rubber and is black with a 2in wide white border.

The bowls are made of wood, rubber, or composition, and may be black or brown. Each set must carry a distinguishing mark.
Wooden bowls have a maximum diameter of 5 1/8in and a maximum weight of 3 1/2lb. They may not be weighted.
Rubber or composition bowls must be 4 5/8-5 1/8in in diameter, and weight 3-3 1/2lb.
All bowls are biased to move along a curved path. The degree of bias is prescribed, and bowls must be officially tested. The biased side is marked.

The jack must be white, weigh 8-10oz, and have a diameter of 2 15/32-2 17/32in.
