Ice hockey is played by two teams on an ice surface known as a rink. Five players and a goalkeeper from each team are allowed on the ice at any time. The object is to score points by hitting the puck with the stick into the opposing team’s goal.

 
Rink

Maximum dimensions are shown. Rinks for international matches have:
a centre line;
b centre circle;
c zone marking;
d face-off circle;
e goal crease;
f goal judge’s box;
g team benches;
h penalty bench;
i boards.

 
Boards

Boards must be:
without obstruction on the side facing the rink;
white in colour;
uniform in height, from 1.1-1.2m (40-48in).

 
Goals

Goals must be of approved design and materials, and placed so as to remain stationary during the game. Posts, crossbar and framework must be red.

 
Players

A team may have 18 players and a regular and spare goalkeeper in uniform at the start of a game.
Players must wear numbers and a list of final names and numbers must be given to the referee or scorer before the start.
A team may have only six players, including a goalkeeper, in play at any time; a bench minor penalty is imposed for an offence.

 
Stick

Wood or other approved material, with no projections.

 
Puck

Vulcanized rubber or other approved material.
Weight: 156-170g.
